What Job Hoppers Offer

Why is being a job hopper such a taboo? Do we need inconspicuous places for anonymous meetings?

Hi, my name is Anne Marie, and I’m a job hopper...?

While job hopping does not merit a 12-step program and we don’t celebrate collecting new chips, here’s 12 reasons you should welcome job hoppers in your organization:

  1. We have seen multiple business models, methodologies and technologies. We bring free benchmarking and fresh ideas to your future continuous improvement initiatives.

  2. Job hoppers thrive in change because that’s our native environment. We’re agile and adaptable.

  3. We love to add value fast. We want to get hands-on as soon as possible. Running full speed makes us feel engaged.

  4. Our hops may or may not have been on our own terms. Don’t look down on us for things beyond our control.

  5. Each job change had a reason behind it. Some for family, others for health and still others in order to find belonging. The ability to lead authentically and show up without a mask attracts us. We want to be a culture complement, not a forced fit.

  6. We have grown on someone else’s time and dime. While we will look to you for future growth, you are seeking to hire us for our skills. Don’t hold how we gained them against us if you don’t have a long-tenured internal candidate up for the same role.

  7. How long have your top leaders been in their past few roles? Does your job architecture promote internal growth opportunities? Perhaps, we are HiPo talent who have changed organizations because we are hungry for a challenge and willing to chase it.

  8. We have tested our skills in multiple environments. We are not one trick ponies. Our track record proceeds us. Go ahead; check our references.

  9. We have strong networks. Need a new vendor? Fresh talent? We likely know someone…or many.

  10. Some hopping may have been the result of consulting, contract or gig work. That’s modern employment. Are we meeting in the same decade?

  11. We wish you’d see a red badge of courage rather than a red flag when you look at our resume. We may have battle scars but with them comes a good story and even better experience.

  12. Give us an opportunity to grow and a reason to stay, and we will. Many of us want nothing more than the right organization, team and leader with whom to plant our roots.

To the Point

The value job hoppers offer your organization outweighs their risk. Your open-mindedness will be rewarded with experienced, resilient and motivated talent. A good leader, healthy culture, rewarding challenge and opportunity to grow will keep us with you for the long haul.
